Morning Berry SmoothieLet’s face it, the American diet is terrible. Rarely do any of us eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables; instead, we reach for what’s quick and easy—packaged food and fast food—which have been so over-processed that their nutrients have long been destroyed. The reality is, we’re running our bodies on empty. WE NEED MORE FUEL, GOOD FUEL. Not empty-calorie junk.

For the past week, I have been adding a superstar ingredient called Shakeology into my morning routine. Who knew that breakfast smoothies like this Morning Berry Smoothie could have so much fuel and power?!! In just 7 days, I have lost 2 pounds and have had more energy than I know what to do with! Email me if you would like more information at fitwasted@gmail.com.

BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIEMy morning booze — Blueberry Protein Smoothie. Nom. Nom.

Here’s what’s up — Packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, these tiny gems are also high in potassium and vitamin C, making them the top choice of doctors and nutritionists. Not only can they lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, they are also anti-inflammatory. Anti-aging superstars, blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, which have been shown to improve vision and brain function. Studies show that eating blueberries slows impairments in motor coordination and memory that accompany aging. These gorgeous berries also reduce inflammation, which is inextricably linked with virtually every chronic disease from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, to diabetes and heart disease.

GuacamoleThis is one of my favorite snacks to make on the weekends — healthy guacamole with a crunchy twist (bacon)!!! Yes, you either love avocados or you hate them. My husband and I LOVE them and here’s why: Avocados are packed with various essential nutrients and “healthy” fats making them a deliciously smart snack for any occasion. Referred to as the “alphabet fruit”, you’re consuming vitamins A, C, E, K and B6, along with an enormous amount of potassium.

Try pairing guacamole with whole-grain breads, turkey wraps or chicken sandwiches. Some even enjoy topping their eggs with it for breakfast, which is a combination I have yet to try (or maybe never, lol). Personally, I suggest ordering guacamole with fresh veggies instead of chips for a healthy alternative — carrot sticks, sliced cucumbers, red  peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

pomThere is more to Fall than pumpkins and Halloween. It’s pomegranate season baby! Typically, pomegranates are in season from September through January and in some cases lasting through February. Taking center stage not only for their taste but for their magnificent health properties, here’s a little pomegranate 101.

Pomegranates are one of the oldest known, nutrient dense fruits respected today for their impressive source of anti-oxidants. Antioxidants, found in fruits, nuts and vegetables, counteract the damaging effects of oxidation to the body. Like an apple turns brown, cars turn to rust or sunspots/age spots appear on your skin, oxidation is the direct results of free radical damage caused by sun, smoke, pollution, stress, chemicals, etc.  continue reading
